Kari Englehardt's Hortus Remedium

On August 22, 2024, we hosted an art exhibition by local artist, Kari Englehardt. If you missed it, we're sorry. It was pretty awesome for several reasons. First, Kari's work exploring phytoremediation - plants capable of cleansing soil from oil and gas contamination, was absolutely stunning, not to mention, very aligned with the sustainability aspect of our Conservancy's mission. Another reason for the show's awesomeness, is that more than 70 people were able to make the exhibit, meet the artist, and get an intimate introduction (or re-introduction) to the historic charm and warmth of The Meeting House. We look forward to more opportunities to showcase the depth and breadth of our mission at The Bird Homestead & Meeting House Conservancy, as well as the versatility of The Meeting House as a center for community and conversation.

As some of you may know, Alice Bird Erickson was an accomplished nature illustrator who grew up at the Bird Homestead. This exhibition was presented in her memory.

About the Artist:

Kari Englehardt, a visual mixed media artist, puts plants in the central role of muse, raconteur and educator. With a body of work rooted at the intersection of the natural and built environments, her goal is to develop conversations and raise awareness to the vital importance of plant life within our shared biosphere. Previous exhibitions have centered on issues such as habitat loss, trans-boundary migration, and phytoremediation of contaminated soil caused by oil and gas production. Her approach merges published academic research, and botanical illustration within a contemporary art framework. Unconventional materials inform the dialogue through the use of wax, contaminated soil and crude oil.
